Persephone is the Goddess of Spring, although she has never had magic and it seems that everything she touches dies. Her mother, Demeter, has always kept her locked away to ‘protect’ Persephone from the outside world. However, Persephone has managed to convince her mother to let her pose as a mortal so that she can go to college and try and live a normal life. She mostly does, except that her mother still controls most aspects of her life. One of the biggest conditions for her mother allowing her some freedom is that Persephone stay away from the Gods.
Persephone lives with her best friend, Lexa, in New Athens. They are about to graduate from college so both are busy with classes and internships. Persephone begins working at New Athens News, one of the most prominent newspapers in New Athens. One night Persephone and Lexa manage to get into Nevernight, an exclusive club and casino owned by the God of the Underworld, Hades. Hades is well known for making impossible bargains with mortals, bargains that if un-fulfilled will cost them their souls. Persephone now finds herself in a contract with Hades after losing a bet with him. Now she has been challenged with having to create life in the underworld within 6-month, or be stuck in the underworld forever.
Persephone sets out to expose Hades by writing about him in the newspaper. What she uncovers is that the god is not what everyone makes him out to be. She discovers that there is more to the story than what he lets the world believe about him. Although it is forbidden, she finds herself falling for the God of the Dead. Loving him could cost her everything, including her freedom.
I’ve never been a huge fan of audiobooks. To me, they have always seemed like a waste of time because I could read the book in way less time. A few months ago, I dicovered that I enjoyed listening to podcasts rather than music while working out or working. I decided to give audiobooks another try. This book was the first fiction audiobook I listened to and I have to say that I enjoyed listening to it, probably more than I would have enjoyed reading it. The narrator did a great job with this book. Overall the book itself was entertaining and spicy. I will say that Persephone overall comes off as a needy, entitled, brat sometimes. It seems like she is always waiting for someone to save her. Lucky for her, Hades is always there. Hades, of course, is a great character. He is dark, possessive, broody, and sexy. I know this is the first book in the series. I enjoyed it and will definitely continue to the next book. I’ll probably keep listening to this series in audiobooks.
