Since I am reading the books in a bit different order, Crown of Midnight is the second book I’ve read in the series. Celaena Sardothien won the contest to become the King’s champion. She is to do his bidding and never ask questions. If she fails or refused, the King will kill everyone she loves. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown, she doesn’t actual kill any of the people she is sent to assassinate. She hides her secret from everyone. She begins to uncover more secrets of the kingdom and this leads to distrust of the people she would have given anything to protect.
In this book there is a lot more character development and world building. I liked this book significantly more than the first one. There was more action, more investment in the characters, and things come together more. I will say, prepare for the character plot twists. No one is ever what they seem.
