Festivalé is small town in Vermont with many secrets, and everyone knows everyone’s business. Amaya Paqutte is the town outsider. She moved to Festivalé with her mom and her baby brother. Her mom got mixed up in some shady town business and left town, leaving Amaya to raise her little brother on her own. During the day she was a dotting sister, her whole world revolving around the car of her autistic brother. By night, to make ends meet and pay for her brother’s therapies she was Esmerelda, a sexy dancer at a club the next town over.
Father Cade Frédéric is a holy man. He was raised in Paris and had a rough upbringing. There was a darkness in him that the nuns where he lived would try to cure with their abuse. When he was 7 he ran away from the nuns and lived in the streets, stealing to survive. It is there that he meets a priest and decides to dedicate his life to God, trying to keep the monster within himself at bay. When he is assigned to become the priest in Festivalé he can sense that there is an evil in the town. When he sets his eyes on Amaya, he is convinced that she is a witch sent to tempt him. He can do nothing but think of her and obsess over her.
This is a dark retelling of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, except in this version, the villain gets the happy ending. This was, in my opinion, the darkest book of the series. There are definite trigger warnings that people should read before starting this book. It is not a book for everyone. I enjoyed listening to it, as I have the other books in this series and recommend it.
