In Blunder there is a dark magic that looms, a mist that calls people into the woods. Once in the mist, they don’t come out. The dark magic is infecting people and the King’s physicians are ordered to kill anyone who gets the fever. Elspeth carries a secret with her. It’s been 11 years since she was infected and her family managed to keep it a secret. The fever affects everyone differently, given them some type of magic. For Elspeth it is a monster in her head. Not even her family knows that the monster exists.

Elspeth tries to stay out of the public eye but when she is approached by the King’s nephew Rayven, she finds herself part of a group that is trying to cure the infection. The only way to do that is to gather all 12 Providence cards and to do so requires committing high treason. The more involved she becomes in this the more the monster in her head starts to take over until finally it does.

This book was really hyped up on booktok and bookstagram but honestly going into it, I had no idea what it was even supposed to be about. Getting into this book was a slow start for me. It took me a while to get what the point of the Providence cards were and how the story ties together. I did like how the story progressed and was really invested in the characters and how the story ends. This book is the first of two and it ends on a cliffhanger that makes you want to rush into the second book. Overall I thought it was excellent and definitely recommend.
