I’m Glad My Mom Died is a memoir written by Jennette McCurdy, former child actor on Nickelodeon shows like iCarly and Sam & Cat. Jennette grew up in California and lived with her mom, dad, 3 brothers and her grandma and grandpa. She learned one thing from a very early age, that life was easier when her mom was happy and she would do anything to keep her mom happy.

Her mom was in cancer remission and would use her cancer as a way of manipulating and gaining sympathy from people. Her mom had always dreamed of being an actress, but that never came to fruition. She put those dreams on Jennette and when she was just 6 years old she started auditioning for roles. Her mom controlled every aspect of her life and would do anything to make Jennette a star. The more famous Jennette became, the more pressure she endured from her mom. Her mom taught her how to have an eating disorder from such a young age, subjected her to abuse, body shamed her, changed her appearance and manipulated her. When she became a star, things got worse. The more famous Jennette became the more she suffered from anxiety, OCD, depression, alcohol addiction, eating disorders. When her mom’s cancer returned, Jennette was finally able to gain freedom in her own life. Her mom eventually died of cancer and it came as a relief for Jennette, because even though she loved her mom and she started to get help for eating disorder and other mental health issues, she started to realize the damage behind everything that she thought was a mother’s love.

This was definitely a 5-star read. Jennette McCurdy does a beautiful job of telling a difficult story. Some of parts of the story were difficult to read, you can’t even imagine having been in that type of situation. Other parts were funny and full of love and joy. I’m sure it was not an easy book to write but I’m glad that she did. I definitely recommend this book.
